Hello everybody! Its been a while but there’s a new exhibition on the horizon. It’s always wondrous how life works and how lives intersect. Almost a year ago I was introduced to the wondrous Alley Michelle of AlleyWho fame. She shared with me her grand idea of committing to an exhibition with a difference and one that was close to my heart. Alley Michelle, an accomplished artist, and entrepreneur accomplished the unenviable task of coordinating a group of seriously talented artists from Gotham Studios and myself to create work on the theme of Heart + Hope Cambodia. We were to create a exhibition of contemporary art responding to the contemporary issues of my home country – which are many but ever the optimist I also see the possibilities. As a Cambodia artist it was an honour to be involved and to have the wonderful feedback from Artists such as Michael Doherty and Jan Altmann. And while I didn’t produce any ‘new’ work per se the exhibition forced me to lift my game to a new level.

My painting is a response to the title of the Exhibition – Heart + Hope. The painting occupies a psychological space in which the heart and hope and inextriciably linked, one cannot be without the other. We cannot hope without using our hearts and at the core of our hearts is an innate wellspring of hope.  The abstracted figure of man symbolises our shared humanity, the sky is a metaphor for an unlimited and open potential,  and the sea also provides a link back to our shared ancestry or the ‘ocean of humanity’. It is only through using our hearts and being open to hope can we ‘rise above’ the currents of oppression and injustice. Above the waves is the light of a new day.

In June of 2010 I had my second solo exhibition called ‘The Flight of Icarus’ at Ellis House Community Arts Centre in Bayswater. It was a the fulfilment of a dream to have an art exhibition there when I was 16. ‘The Flight of Icarus was an exhibition about having the courage to ‘fly’ and to follow one’s dreams despite the costs. It did very very as well.

In February 2010. I had my first solo exhibition at Kulcha, Fremantle. The exhibition ‘The Mango Tree’ was based on a song by Angus & Julia Stone under the same name. It combine my free favourite things: ‘Sun, Love & mangoes’. I would have to say it was mildly successful and I had some great exposure and feedback. It lead to Gallery 281 having some of my later stuff to sell. Things were looking bright.

On Friday 5th February 2010 at 5pm at Kulcha in Fremantle I will be making my first foray into the arts world. Yes I have been selling work for a while and yes I have been in a number of group shows, but in a group show you can hide in the shadows of others. In a solo there is no where to hide. I’ve read somewhere that the No.1 fear for most people is talking in public in front of their peers, having an exhibition where it’s all about you seems to be no different. So why do it you ask? For me it’s about dogged curiosity? I just want to know how far I can take this thing I can do, that other people call Art and I call them paintings. I’ve always though I had something to say and I seem to say it best in pictures.
Now I’ve had a couple of months to start working on this exhibition but I only officially started on Monday. I think I work better under some type of pressure but obviously I’m not going to wait until the week before – that would be suicide! And while I have some type of style I am working with I don’t think I am confident enough to have a show based on a ‘style’. I wanted an idea and I didn’t get that ‘A-ha!’ moment until two weeks ago when a friend asked for a commission. I wanted to do a show which featured people in love, but doing what? (Apart from the obvious…) Lately I have had this love affair with trees, I am absolutely inspired by them. So in a passing conversation, after hearing my one of my favourite tunes ‘The Mango Tree’ by Angus and Julia Stone it dawned on me how I could incorporate all of my current interests – a show called ‘The Mango Tree’ an exhibition of NEW works on the theme of love, sun and of course Mangoes!
This time lapse video idea came about as I was surfing Youtube and saw these wonderful time lapse painting demonstrations. I kept wondering if I could do that too? So I researched and it seemed I could. I quickly realised that Youtube could be another avenue to show my work and skills.  And the rest is history!

In preparation for my next solo exhibition ‘The Flight of Icarus’ in June, I had to revamp my short artist statement.

An artist’s bio begins with the past and works it’s way up to the present. An artist statement starts with the present in mind and looks towards the future. And a ‘short’ artist bio is probably no more than 1 paragraph in length, it’s what marketers would class as their ‘elevator pitch’. Have a good look at yourself if you can’t sum up what you do in less than 100 words – how about 30 words??

Some things to jog an artist statement out:

  • Who are you and what makes you you, and your art yours? Do you include humour, do you specialise in animal portraiture? Do you do underwater yarn spinning? Whatever.
  • What are you working on right now? How do you go about it?
  • What do you value in Art? In your work?
  • What do you want to point out to your viewers that might not be blindingly obvious, and then add the obvious.
  • Do you have a juicy story?

I had a look at my short artist statement and I cringed, it was obvious that I had moved on stylistically and thematically. But that’s ok, that’s what a short artist statement is for, it’s for constantly updating, it’s a work in progress, just like you are.

Here is my new short artist statement:

Born in 1979, during Cambodia’s civil war Samith arrived with his family, aged 6, as refugees on the shores of WA, grateful to be alive. Unable to initially speak the language Samith fostered the love of communicating through drawings and images. Fast forward 25 years and Samith has developed a uniquely figurative style and a thematic repertoire  in which his paintings inhabit a world of silent hopes, trials, love and tribulations. He utilises the shared experience of the body as a canvas to explore and investigate the landscape of the human condition; love, trust, freedom, hope, and failure. Samith has exhibited for a number of years, won various awards, and recently celebrated his first solo exhibition ‘The Mango Tree’. Samith lives in Perth, with his beautiful fiancee, two daughters and two guinea pigs named Charlie and Mr Foster.

I could go on and on, but I won’t and I can’t. This is an example of a short artist statement.

I wish all I had to do towards an Art exhibition is just paint whatever captures my fancy, however, that is not the case. I will blog about my progress towards my second solo Art exhibition, and hopefully it will help others learn the steps to do the same or as a case study on HOW NOT to create art exhibitions. Yes, I’ve already had one, but I had heaps of help from the wonderful crew at Kulcha, I really feel this is the exhibition with the real learning curve. I am giving myself less time to do more things. Let the frivolity begin!

  1. Exhibition concept/ idea check!
  2. Update Bio
  3. Update Artist Statement – to make it relevant for the exhibition
  4. Book the exhibition space – How much does it cost?
  5. Update the website
  6. Update mailing list and utilise it!
  7. Arrange catering
  8. Arrange drinks
  9. Can you get funding or a grants?
  10. Submit press releases to radio/newspaper/ online (MARKET MARKET MARKET)
  11. Create and send invites
  12. Arrange guest speaker if necessary – prepare speech
  13. Set up exhibition

I love having a reason to paint, give me a deadline and a theme and I’m as happy as a pig in mud and as stressed as a man on death row! lol

That is why I’m announcing that I will be presenting a new body of work for my next solo art exhibition titled ‘The Flight of Icarus’ to be held on the 3 June – 28 June 2010 at Ellis House Community Art Centre in Bayswater. If you don’t know about the story of the ill fated flight f Icarus I suggest you Google it. Having said it I am going to give the myth my own Samith slant to it.

Why am I having another art exhibition? Well there are many reasons including there was an opening in June at Ellis House, I love to paint, I like to push myself, I like the marketing, I like making money but perhaps my strongest reason is ‘Why Not!’.

Here is my checklist for the Exhibition as I plan to document my progress in this blog so you can discover how an art exhibition comes together and of course for your amusement as you laugh at my ridiculousness.

Checklist for an exhibition (in no particular order – because I haven’t done that yet)

  • Update Artist Bio
  • Update artist statement
  • Paint 8 Large sized paintings (min 100 x 80cm)
  • Paint 12 medium sized paintings (aprox 80x 70)
  • Paint 20 A3 drawings
  • Design invites and flyers
  • Devise a devious exhibition hook or competition?
  • Create press releases and send them out
  • Update website www.samithpich.com
  • Update blog twice weekly to document progress
  • Email mailing list – How can I get more subscribers?
  • Organise catering
  • Seek funding grant to offset costs?
  • Organise wine and drinks sponsorship
  • Market! Market! Market!
  • Organise gallery and book exhibition space
  • Organise opening night speaker and dignitaries
  • Create April Arty Newsletter

This is not an exhaustive list but it should give you an idea about what’s involved (or what I subject myself to! lol) in the creation of an Art exhibition. Though nothing is more important than the actual artwork, there’s much more to an art exhibition than the artwork.

It’s been a wonderful fortnight in my life with many winners and grinners. On the 28th of February I held ‘The Mango Tree Sundowner’ at Kulcha. I was actually really pleased with the turn out, and I believe it’s a viable strategy to get people who weren’t able to come for the opening to meet and greet. So instead of having one big bash it allows people to have a chance to be a part of the exhibition process. I was really thankful to have met the almost twenty people who came to see me and my Art, and I believe I actually had time to talk to most of them!

An hour into the evening with a rollickin reggae muffin DJ spinning some laid back tracks I did the draw for the painting ‘Dawning Love’ and for the second prize movie tickets. CONGRATULATIONS to Nathan Boonman for winning first prize and Manuel Reichert for winning the movie tickets. I called them the following day and both sounded pretty darn happy with the news! Oh, I almost forgot, I sold another painting that night – yay!

On 25th February I partook in an Interactive Arts exhibition at the Perth Town Hall for the Media 140 Conference and exhibited ‘Sunset’ (Acrylic on Canvas). Tom Well (fellow artist) and Jennifer manned the exhibit with Fleur Allen and we all had a big chat fest with the crowd (though no paintings sold that night). And here’s something I want to point out. As an artist, if you really consider yourself one, you MUST network. Anyone who works for themselves must take the initiative and share what they have with people, and often those people are strangers. Because no one else will, can or should honk your horn as good as you. So, I sucked in as much courage as I could, swigged down my glass of orange juice and MADE myself talk to ten perfectly good strangers throughout the night. And while I made no sales, I got some good business cards, talked to some really interesting people, got emails and perhaps started friendships that will blossom later. I remember reading something form Jack Canfield, author of the Chicken Soup for the Soul series that whenever he bumped into anyone or found himself around a large crowd he felt it was his duty to let them know about what he had to offer. Because in life, there are no coincidences there is only what you make it!

It was a perfect, balmy summer’s evening on the 5th February when 50 – 60 people packed into Kulcha and celebrated the opening of my first solo Art Exhibition ‘The Mango Tree’. Wine flowed, food was munched on and yours truely worked very hard to try and talk to everybody. I want to thank everyone for coming, and I believe it was a great night to have by all!
I recieved some wonderful feedback about the works, and how the venue’s bold colours complemented my own work. It was quite magical having a few seconds to rest on the balcony sipping on some juice and and watching Fremantle’s Cafe culture come to life.
Thank you so again so much for those who came. I also realised that quite a number weren’t able to make it considering the timing of the exhibition and it’s short duration. So for those who didn’t make it (and even if you did) I’d like to invite you and your friends to meet me and my friends for drinks and get together at the following:
