Icarus Takes Flight II Work in progress

Countdown towards my next Solo Art Exhibition begins…

I love having a reason to paint, give me a deadline and a theme and I’m as happy as a pig in mud and as stressed as a man on death row! lol

That is why I’m announcing that I will be presenting a new body of work for my next solo art exhibition titled ‘The Flight of Icarus’ to be held on the 3 June – 28 June 2010 at Ellis House Community Art Centre in Bayswater. If you don’t know about the story of the ill fated flight f Icarus I suggest you Google it. Having said it I am going to give the myth my own Samith slant to it.

Why am I having another art exhibition? Well there are many reasons including there was an opening in June at Ellis House, I love to paint, I like to push myself, I like the marketing, I like making money but perhaps my strongest reason is ‘Why Not!’.

Here is my checklist for the Exhibition as I plan to document my progress in this blog so you can discover how an art exhibition comes together and of course for your amusement as you laugh at my ridiculousness.

Checklist for an exhibition (in no particular order – because I haven’t done that yet)

  • Update Artist Bio
  • Update artist statement
  • Paint 8 Large sized paintings (min 100 x 80cm)
  • Paint 12 medium sized paintings (aprox 80x 70)
  • Paint 20 A3 drawings
  • Design invites and flyers
  • Devise a devious exhibition hook or competition?
  • Create press releases and send them out
  • Update website www.samithpich.com
  • Update blog twice weekly to document progress
  • Email mailing list – How can I get more subscribers?
  • Organise catering
  • Seek funding grant to offset costs?
  • Organise wine and drinks sponsorship
  • Market! Market! Market!
  • Organise gallery and book exhibition space
  • Organise opening night speaker and dignitaries
  • Create April Arty Newsletter

This is not an exhaustive list but it should give you an idea about what’s involved (or what I subject myself to! lol) in the creation of an Art exhibition. Though nothing is more important than the actual artwork, there’s much more to an art exhibition than the artwork.

If you can think of anything I’ve missed or have any ideas to make this my best exhibition yet I would be happy to hear from you!

Socrates & the morning news

Socrates was approached by a friend during his morning walk. ‘Hey Socrates! I have some juicy news to tell you!’

‘Wait’ said Socrates, ‘First, answer me three questions.’

‘Err… ok, said the man.

‘First’ said Socrates ‘This news you want to tell me, is it about someone you know personally?’

‘Err no,’replied the man. ‘It’s about a friend of a friend of a friend.’

‘Secondly,’ continued Socrates,’Is this news 100% true and reliable that you can vouch for?’

‘Err..No, but I was told the source is very reliable!’

‘Finally’ said Socrates, ‘Is this good news or bad news?’

‘Bad News…’ the man said slowly.

‘Okay’ said Socrates. ‘So let me see if I have this clear. You want to tell me bad news about someone you don’t know personally and you’re not even sure it’s 100% true?’

‘Well, I was going to’ replied the man sheepishly, ‘until you put it that way!’

Winners and grinners.

It’s been a wonderful fortnight in my life with many winners and grinners. On the 28th of February I held ‘The Mango Tree Sundowner’ at Kulcha. I was actually really pleased with the turn out, and I believe it’s a viable strategy to get people who weren’t able to come for the opening to meet and greet. So instead of having one big bash it allows people to have a chance to be a part of the exhibition process. I was really thankful to have met the almost twenty people who came to see me and my Art, and I believe I actually had time to talk to most of them!

An hour into the evening with a rollickin reggae muffin DJ spinning some laid back tracks I did the draw for the painting ‘Dawning Love’ and for the second prize movie tickets. CONGRATULATIONS to Nathan Boonman for winning first prize and Manuel Reichert for winning the movie tickets. I called them the following day and both sounded pretty darn happy with the news! Oh, I almost forgot, I sold another painting that night – yay!

Hooray! Nathan Boonman won 'Dawning Love!'

On 25th February I partook in an Interactive Arts exhibition at the Perth Town Hall for the Media 140 Conference and exhibited ‘Sunset’ (Acrylic on Canvas). Tom Well (fellow artist) and Jennifer manned the exhibit with Fleur Allen and we all had a big chat fest with the crowd (though no paintings sold that night). And here’s something I want to point out. As an artist, if you really consider yourself one, you MUST network. Anyone who works for themselves must take the initiative and share what they have with people, and often those people are strangers. Because no one else will, can or should honk your horn as good as you. So, I sucked in as much courage as I could, swigged down my glass of orange juice and MADE myself talk to ten perfectly good strangers throughout the night. And while I made no sales, I got some good business cards, talked to some really interesting people, got emails and perhaps started friendships that will blossom later. I remember reading something form Jack Canfield, author of the Chicken Soup for the Soul series that whenever he bumped into anyone or found himself around a large crowd he felt it was his duty to let them know about what he had to offer. Because in life, there are no coincidences there is only what you make it!

Finally, you can still see ‘Roses with Red Vase No.1 & 2′ at Ellis House until Sunday 7th Februay and they are available for purchase.

And I almost forgot! I got a message from Kulcha, Fremantle requesting I create a stylised drawing of their Balcony for a lovely fee. Needless to say I was happy to oblige!

Ok, that’s enough for now. Ciao and have a fantastic week!

Time & The Artist

I’m writing this at 7.30 in the morning, my mind is three quarters awake and supposedly the first half an hour of your morning is very important, because you’re at your clearest.
I’m writing this post more for me and two thoughts rest on my mind like a delicious dish of fish: Time and Gratitude. I’m thinking about Time because of many reasons – one, I’m writing an ebook about time management (So any suggestions would be much appreciated). Two, we’re always in Time like fish in water but often we’re never truly utilising it effectively, we use time but we don’t consider it. Or more specifically we don’t consider whether  the way we’re using time is actually assisting us. If we go back to the fish metaphor, I don’t know of too many fish that thrash about in the sea any more than they have to and conversely I know that many fish actually use underwater currents that can take them hundreds of kilometres with little time or effort. Time!
Secondly – gratitude. I believe I’m a pretty grateful person but I believe I can do more. As I move on with time I’m realising how grateful I am to be in it. Because the only time time wouldn’t matter would be when I’m, well, dead. Yesterday was a challenging, jumbled, cosy, PERFECT day. I cannot describe how perfect it was, simply because the day came to us just as it did and no other way. But here’s the clincher, and you can argue with me on this – perfect days cannot exist unless you are grateful for them and give them thanks.
The only difference between a good normal day and an outstanding day is 1) Knowing you spent time in what matters and more importantly 2) Being grateful. And the great thing about gratitude is that you can be grateful after, during or even before you actually have your day!
Thank you yesterday, thanks you today!

Warmest regards

Love Painting for the Wifey before Valentines Day

I got some roses for the wifey. But then I got inspired. So this is what greeted her when she walked through the door lol.

Launch of ‘The Mango Tree’ @ Kulcha – success!

It was a perfect, balmy summer’s evening on the 5th February when 50 – 60 people packed into Kulcha and celebrated the opening of my first solo Art Exhibition ‘The Mango Tree’. Wine flowed, food was munched on and yours truely worked very hard to try and talk to everybody. I want to thank everyone for coming, and I believe it was a great night to have by all!
I recieved some wonderful feedback about the works, and how the venue’s bold colours complemented my own work. It was quite magical having a few seconds to rest on the balcony sipping on some juice and and watching Fremantle’s Cafe culture come to life.
Thank you so again so much for those who came. I also realised that quite a number weren’t able to make it considering the timing of the exhibition and it’s short duration. So for those who didn’t make it (and even if you did) I’d like to invite you and your friends to meet me and my friends for drinks and get together at the following:
Sundowner @ Kulcha
From 6pm Sunday 28th February 2010
@ Kulcha 13 South Terrace above Dome Cafe
Fremantle
Once again, thank you for supporting my dreams, and I hope to talk to you all soon!

Reaching goals (part one)

Hello! Is it nearly February already?? I’m still trying to enjoy January!

Great news! I have finished creating 30 works for the exhibition, I’m going to be spending the next week finalising the artwork and varnishing, so when you see them they won’t be just good they’ll be great. Perhaps a ‘I just gotta buy that’ great…? :)

I have learnt many life lessons so far from this exhibition and I’d like to share three with you in relation to reaching your own goals if I may because I think it could assist you.

3 Powerful Components to Goal Setting

1. WHY

“There is no such thing as lazy people,  just people who  don’t have big enough goals that move them” – Tony Robbins

The power of goal setting became very apparent to me when I discovered what it did for my soul in a very practical sense. It became the rocket fuel that  propelled me to create 20 works in a month and a half. And the power or fuel in goal setting does not actually come from the actual goal (in my case have 30 artworks ready by 26 Jan or perhaps in your case it might be ‘to read 10 books in 90 days’ it actually comes from the WHY. Why are you actually giving yourself this goal? What feeling or accomplishment will it give you, more importantly how will it grow or change you, rather than what will you get? An example could be the goal to lose weight. Though honestly, who really wants to go through the process of exercising and dieting for the sake of exercising and dieting?? However if your reasons why were to have the freedom to play with your kids, look great in some jeans, live your life fuller, and you learnt that getting fit will improve your sex life by about 30% then exercising becomes a no brainer! In my case my why to have a solo art exhibition was to prove to myself and the world I was serious as an artist, to learn the process of setting up an exhibition, to help myself grow as an artist, and to share my gifts and vision with as many people as possible so they can be inspired to more fully love, give and find beauty in others and themselves. With all those reasons why, having an exhibition was just a natural vehicle to reach my goal.

To summarise, when you create goals, knowing the reasons WHY you are going to pursue that goal can be the difference between being passionately motivated to go fourth and conquer or a weak half assed attempt.

Know this: The natural expression of your soul is to learn, grow and become greater than you could possibly imagine. You know you’re hitting the right ‘why buttons’ when your heart stirs and your soul soars at the very thought of ‘why not’?.

Do this: Got a goal? List as many reasons why it will benefit you and others. Think of how you will feel, how you will grow and who you could become if you reached that go.

Ok, I look forward to talking about the second powerful component of goal setting, CLARITY,  tomorrow. Until then, have an outstanding day!

warm regards
